Getting Around - Transportation
By Automobile
- New residents of Michigan must obtain a Michigan driver's license within 30 days of establishing residence here (out-of-state students and those in the armed forces are exempt.) Licenses are issued by one of the Secretary of State license bureaus, for a fee of $13. Your out-of-state license will be required when applying.
- Automobiles must be registered (as well as licensed) as soon as you become a resident of Michigan's Great Southwest, through the Michigan Department of State License Bureau. Mandatory items required to obtain a plate include: certificate of title, and proof of Michigan no-fault insurance.
- Michigan "No-Fault" insurance is mandatory in the state of Michigan, and drivers are required to carry proof of insurance at all times.
- State law also requires drivers and all passengers in the front seat to wear a seatbelt or ride in a restraining device. Children from infancy to 2 years of age must be strapped into approved car seats, and children from 2-4 years old must ride in either approved seats or a standard automobile seatbelt.
